Expanding REDD+ in East Kalimantan

The Nature Conservancy is working in Berau, East Kalimantan to expand the REDD+ terrestrial program to include mangroves through alternative livelihoods for mangrove communities, improving the policy framework for mangrove protection, and developing sustainable mangrove management plans. The project will operate both at the regional and local scale in partnership with government officials and local leaders on the wider issues of deforestation. The initial sites are located in Berau delta and stretch to mangrove area of Derawan Islands Marine Park, covering around 41,990 ha of Berau’s mangroves. Experience and best practice from field work will be leverage to other places in East Kalimantan and to inform national policy.
