GLOBAL PROJECTS

The GMA is made up of members and national chapters. Both are linked to global efforts through the international GMA team. They tailor approaches to local needs while incorporating local ecological knowledge and community input.

GMA MEMBERS

Members join in the efforts to raise the profile of mangroves and the threats facing these ecosystems. Our members collaborate on field work, policy initiatives and campaigns.

NATIONAL CHAPTERS

National Chapters reflect the grassroots momentum driving mangrove conservation at local levels. They form the GMA’s driving force, supported by local partners.

National Chapter

  • Established March 2024

  • Organizations Involved: Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, Perry Institute for Marine Science, Waterkeepers Bahamas, Friends of the Environment, Cape Eleuthera Institute. Co-led by Bonefish and Tarpon Trust.

  • Focus: Currently, the chapter is focusing efforts in the Northern Bahamas (Grand Bahama and Abaco islands) to address damaged mangrove forests. Our approach relies on community led restoration where planning and implementation efforts are informed by local stakeholders. Our restoration crew includes local fishers and other ecosystem users.

  • Advice to others: Bring large groups of stakeholders together to the restoration sites to see the collective efforts and results. Give participants the opportunity to use their skill-set to the advantage of the restoration goals, i.e. let boat captains be boat captains and share their expertise.
  • Primary contact: Rashema Ingraham
