Mangroves and Markets

Linking climate change adaptation and mitigation with sustainable aquaculture into national policy.

Promoting ecosystem-based adaptation by providing incentives for mangrove conservation

Thailand and Vietnam have lost half their mangroves over the past 30 years, primarily as a result of clearing shrimp ponds.  This has serious consequences since mangroves protect against tidal waves and storm surges; they are vital fish nursery-grounds, provide timber, honey, and other products; and raise land level by trapping sediment.

Mangroves and Markets

Mangroves sequester carbon faster than any other forest type

The Mangroves and Markets (MAM) project works with partners and donors to support the drafting of a national policy in Vietnam that provides the legal basis for mangrove Payment for Ecosystem systems; works with major European shrimp importers to expand certification in Vietnam to support market access and consequently jobs and income; and takes advantage of the experience in Thailand to accelerate learning and innovation.

MAM links climate change adaptation and mitigation with sustainable aquaculture and will integrate results into national policies.  If you would like more information, please click here.
