- Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration
Learn how the GMA brings together the latest local and scientific knowledge about restoration best-practices in one place. RESTORATION GUIDELINES Now more than ever before there is a massive public and private interest in recovering mangrove ecosystems at scale. With this excitement for mangrove restoration, it is imperative to ensure successful mangrove restoration interventions. The Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration brings together the latest accumulated local and scientific knowledge about mangrove restoration best-practices into one comprehensive resource. The aim is to align mangrove practitioners, NGOs, governments, scientists, industry, local communities and funders around accepted best-practices for science-based and inclusive mangrove restoration. A JOINT VENTURE Meet the Contributing Partners The Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration is a joint product developed by the Global Mangrove Alliance and the Blue Carbon Initiative and led by the University of Queensland, Conservation International, Wetlands International, Blue Marine Foundation and the International Blue Carbon Institute, along with dozens of mangrove scientists and user groups across the world. WHAT WE BRING Step-by-step guidance on best practices for every phase of the mangrove restoration project cycle - project design, funding and implementation. Centered on well-established community-based ecological restoration approaches that enhance restoration success and longevity. The latest best practices with links to useful resources, gathered into one place for the first time. Sub-modules on blue carbon: How to align mangrove restoration with national climate mitigation targets How to produce carbon credits to fund long-term project maintenance, monitoring and community benefits Additional modules related to coastal protection, biodiversity and fisheries. Watch: Implementing Best Practices GUIDING PRINCIPLES Six principles woven throughout the guidelines that can be applied in every phase of the project cycle. Safeguard nature and maximize biodiversity Employ the best information and practices Empower people and address their needs Align to the broader context – operate locally and contextually Design for sustainability Mobilize high-integrity capital Read the Report URGENT ACTION Of the 1,100,000 ha of mangroves that have been lost since 1996, around 818,300 ha of mangroves are considered to have high “restorable” potential. Urgent collective action is needed to restore damaged or destroyed mangroves around the world. If done properly, restoration can enhance coastal resilience, fisheries productivity, aquaculture, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. ACCURACY Now more than ever before there is a large public and private interest in recovering lost mangrove areas and protecting existing ones. With such excitement for mangrove restoration, it is imperative to ensure successful mangrove restoration interventions at scale. BEST PRACTICE Some regions still see failure rates of up to 80%. This is preventable. The best practices shared in the guidelines are all science-based and provide fair and equitable benefits. They move away from single-species mass tree-planting, which fails to restore functional mangrove forests, to inclusive ecological restoration approaches. This process of effective mangrove restoration is nuanced, complex and site-specific and requires coordinated project design. CO-BENEFIT Mangrove restoration efforts using these best practices will more likely result in a sizable, diverse, functional and self-sustaining ecosystem that offers the desired benefits for people and nature. The sharing of best practices will therefore allow us to dramatically increase the rate of success and move the needle on mangrove restoration at scale. - The National Chapters Working Group | The Mangrove Alliance
National Chapters and Implementation develops national chapters aligned with national goals and synergies with the GMA goals. THE NATIONAL CHAPTERS & IMPLEMENTATION WORKING GROUP The GMA recognizes that to be able to meet the ambitious goals we need to support on the ground actions to halt losses, increase protections and promote science-based restoration. The joint working group of National Chapters and Implementation, supports the development of national chapters of the Global Mangrove Alliance which includes defining the national goals pertaining to mangroves and synergies with the GMA goals. In parallel to the formation of the national chapters, we are conducting a stocktake of the GMA members’ skill-sets. Through this process we are able to identify common and unique needs of the different national chapters, which we can then match with the different skills and expertise within different GMA working groups and inside, and outside of, GMA member organizations and individuals. With the overall aim of facilitating implementation of on the ground activities to support both national and global goals. Activities: Support the development of National Chapters of the Global Mangrove Alliance Identify national priorities and how they link to the GMA Goals Identify and understand the needs of individual National Chapters that will allow them to meet national and GMA goals Identify common needs across National Chapters and link them to expertise inside and outside the GMA – as identified in country roadmaps and other materials developed during their formation. Stocktake to know the skill sets available within the GMA to match them with the needs of chapters Support actions to achieve the GMA Goals Work with National Chapters to provide input on and co-create GMA tools, products, and research Support activities that integrate with the other GMA working groups Working Group Leads Join efforts to conserve and protect mangroves, collaborate on field work and partner on policy initiatives. The GMA has projects and initiatives around the world led by members and national chapters. GLOBAL PROJECTS The GMA is made up of members and national chapters. Both are linked to global efforts through the international GMA team. They tailor approaches to local needs while incorporating local ecological knowledge and community input. GMA MEMBERS Members join in the efforts to raise the profile of mangroves and the threats facing these ecosystems. Our members collaborate on field work, policy initiatives and campaigns. NATIONAL CHAPTERS National Chapters reflect the grassroots momentum driving mangrove conservation at local levels. They form the GMA’s driving force, supported by local partners. MEMBER MAP This map below shows GMA Members as well as GMA National Chapters. Navigate to explore our global network and the countries in which we have mangrove projects. National Chapter Bahamas National Chapter Established March 2024 Organizations Involved: Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, Perry Institute for Marine Science, Waterkeepers Bahamas, Friends of the Environment, Cape Eleuthera Institute. Co-led by Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. Focus : Currently, the chapter is focusing efforts in the Northern Bahamas (Grand Bahama and Abaco islands) to address damaged mangrove forests. Our approach relies on community led restoration where planning and implementation efforts are informed by local stakeholders. Our restoration crew includes local fishers and other ecosystem users. Advice to others: Bring large groups of stakeholders together to the restoration sites to see the collective efforts and results. Give participants the opportunity to use their skill-set to the advantage of the restoration goals, i.e. let boat captains be boat captains and share their expertise.
