- Accelerating the Mangrove Breakthrough at COP29
Global Action and Investments for Scaling Mangrove Conservation The launch of the NDC Task Force and strengthened partnerships took centre stage at UNFCCC COP29 to accelerate mangrove conservation and climate resilience worldwide. UNFCCC COP29 continued to mobilize significant progress towards securing the Mangrove Breakthrough’s goal of 15 million hectares of mangroves underpinned by USD 4 billion of new investments by 2030. The Mangrove Breakthrough held an important event at the UAE Pavilion today, marking a major milestone in accelerating mangrove conservation and strengthening climate resilience globally. They hosted “Achieving the Mangrove Breakthrough: Global Action on Mangrove Restoration and Protection” alongside Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) and the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) to showcase the significant advancements made since COP28 and the critical role of mangroves in combating climate change. - Global Mangrove Alliance at UNFCCC COP29
The annual UN climate summit, COP29, dubbed the “Finance COP”, has kicked off in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) is excited to host and co-lead several key events focused on advancing the Mangrove Breakthrough and promoting nature-based solutions for climate resilience. Mangroves are one of the world’s most threatened ecosystems, losing over 1 million hectares since 1996. As nations strive to reverse deforestation by 2030, safeguarding mangroves is vital. Despite their critical benefits, mangroves receive only 1% of climate finance. The Mangrove Breakthrough advocates for increased investment to restore and protect these ecosystems. Launched at UNFCCC COP27 by the UN High Level Champions and the GMA, The Mangrove Breakthrough is a multi-stakeholder initiative to mobilize USD 4 billion and protect 15 million hectares of mangroves by 2030. Meeting the Mangrove Breakthrough collective goals is critical to meeting both the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement and Global Biodiversity Framework , as mangroves are our main allies to mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and support livelihoods. 2024 has been a pivotal year to further design and mobilize the initiative. Thus far 30 governments (both sub-national and national) and more than 50 non-state actors, civil society, and private sector leaders endorsed the Mangrove Breakthrough, committing to collectively achieve the Mangrove Breakthroughs ambitious goals . By uniting policy, finance, and field action, the Mangrove Breakthrough is bridging the gaps between sectors, catalyzing transformative, science-based mangrove conservation and restoration at scale, building on the best available science, best practices, and lessons learned. At COP29 the Global Mangrove Alliance is encouraging more governments and non-state actors to endorse the Mangrove Breakthrough and mobilising finance for mangrove action at scale. - Global Mangrove Alliance at CBD COP16
From 21 October – 1 November, the Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 16) will be held in Cali, Colombia. Governments will review the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and present the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. COP 16 will further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilization for the Global Biodiversity Framework. Mangroves provide habitat for 341 threatened species around the world, supporting terrestrial wildlife, sea creatures and other species in their pools and channels around the roots and indirectly support the health of other biodiversity hotspots. Global Mangrove Alliance partners are participating in the conference advocating for accelerated action and investments for sustainably managing and increasing mangrove cover by 2030, while highlighting our significant actions to protect and restore mangroves, supporting Parties in the implementation of NBSAPs, NDCs and NAPs. Policy brief: Integrating Mangrove Ecosystems into NBSAPs through the Global Mangrove Watch The Global Mangrove Watch (GMW) is an online platform that provides remote sensing data and tools for global monitoring of mangroves. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity can use the GMW in the integration of mangrove commitments into their NBSAP’s revisions and national reports, collectively catalyzing ambition and action on mangroves and other coastal ecosystems. This policy brief summarizes how the GMW can be used by governments to enhance their NBSAP’s. During CBD COP16 we will also further mobilise the Mangrove Breakthrough , a global initiative to secure the future of over 15 million hectares of mangroves by 2030 and present our progress made in 2024 and our plans for 2025: Endorsement thus far by 30 governments (both sub-national and national) and more than 50 non-state actors Launch of the NDC Task Force to transform government endorsements to the Mangrove Breakthrough into action via mangrove-positive NDCs and aligned NBSAPs. Establishment of the Mangrove Breakthrough Secretariat, with Ambition Loop as the host organisation, and its governance structure, beginning with the Council formation, a consortium of representatives from key stakeholder sectors. Launch of the Mangrove Breakthrough Finance Task Force to develop a deal-making process to incubate, develop and secure funding for 2-3 investable projects in 2024-2025 showing proof of concepts for the mechanisms recommended in the Mangrove Breakthrough Financial Roadmap. Development of Regional Roadmaps and country proposals to mobilize large-scale funding to achieve the Breakthrough targets by supporting locally led action on the ground and address impediments to scaling conservation and restoration efforts. Events by the Global Mangrove Alliance: Thursday, 24 October Blue Success – How Ocean Action is Delivering for the Global Biodiversity Framework Where: Nature Positive Pavilion, Blue Zone Host: The Nature Conservancy When : 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. The ocean runs through the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and is relevant to almost every target of it. However, historically, the ocean has often been underrepresented in National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs), resulting in slower progress for the ocean than terrestrial ecosystems. A case in point: to date around 17% of land has been protected, but only about 8% of the ocean has been designated as Marine Protected Areas. As countries finalize their new NBSAPs, there is an opportunity to change this trend and usher in a wave of blue success. This event will share different approaches to successful ocean action in Tanzania, Chile and Indonesia, including various tools and perspectives crucial to the creation and implementation of NBSAPs that can be replicated across the world. - Demonstrating and upscaling Ecological Mangrove Restoration in North Kalimantan, Indonesia
By Wetlands International The To plant or not to Plant initiative by Wetlands International works to rehabilitate mangroves by applying best practices in mangrove restoration, and by enabling NGOs, government agencies and communities to effectively upscale their work. Indonesia is one of the 4 countries where we demonstrate Ecological Mangrove Restoration (EMR) on the ground, focused on natural mangrove regeneration, while we support others to embrace this approach and move away from traditional mass planting. In Indonesia, mangrove restoration still largely relies on planting practices, which presents challenges for achieving sustainable restoration. While natural regeneration takes longer than planting, the success rate is a lot higher and results in more resilient mangrove forests that deliver more benefits for biodiversity, climate and people. Despite the recognized benefits of EMR, its widespread adoption remains limited. To address this, this project is actively engaging with agencies, practitioners, and local communities involved in mangrove restoration activities. Additionally, the team is providing advisory support to the government to enhance policies related to mangrove management. Building on the demonstration site in Demak recognised as UN Restoration Flagship Project, and other restoration projects, this project selected and implemented Ecological Mangrove Restoration in Liagu Village, in North Kalimantan. In this 14 hectares pilot site, best practice mangrove restoration is demonstrated in abandoned fishponds where mangroves have not naturally regenerated. The aim is to inspire replication and upscaling in other areas with similar situations on North and East Kalimantan. Zigzag pattern of hydrological channels in Liagu @Wetlands International Indonesia In the demonstration site in Liagu, the hydrology had been disturbed as a result of 15 years of aquaculture activities. The absence of appropriate hydrological channels and the high elevation compared to other locations has prevented mangrove propagules and seeds from nearby healthy mangroves to reach the abandoned ponds. To restore this, a zigzag pattern of channels was created that mimics the natural flow pattern. In addition, propagules were spread in hydrological channel pathways, to accelerate the natural regeneration process and to introduce some mangrove species other than pioneering species. Repair of hydrological channels @Wetlands International Indonesia Monitoring has already revealed notable changes in land elevation and natural mangrove growth at the site, but full restoration takes time. While natural regeneration takes longer than planting, trees that naturally appear will be able to survive in the suitable conditions that were created. In contrast, planting tends to use a single species in often unsuitable biophysical conditions for the species used. These mangroves are also more susceptible to pests and diseases. Local communities and pond owners are involved throughout all stages of the program. Guided by field facilitators, they are conducting survey activities in preliminary and baseline assessments, planning, design and implementation activities as well as monitoring of the restoration process. This engagement fosters a sense of ownership and commitment to the long-term maintenance of restoration locations. Also the Forest Management Unit is closely engaged and trained. Joint planning and design with the Liagu village community @Wetlands International Indonesia Wetlands International Indonesia will upscale ecological mangrove restoration in 33,000 ha of degraded mangrove in North and East Kalimantan, in a joint programme (NASCLIM) with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). In addition, through support of the Food Planet Prize Award Wetlands International will restore another 10 hectares of degraded mangrove and conserve 15 ha of existing mangroves in North Kalimantan. Capacity building and policy uptake of best practices is supported through: Support for uptake of Ecological Mangrove Restoration as best practice in Indonesia’s national mangrove strategy, technical guidelines and government investments, in collaboration with partners from the Global Mangrove Alliance Indonesia. Site visits for policy makers and experts organisations to our mangrove restoration demonstration sites in Demak and Banten (Central Java) to share lessons and inspire stakeholders about ecological mangrove rehabilitation and environmentally friendly aquaculture. Training of so far 262 people on Community based Ecological Mangrove restoration (CBEMR), reaching various stakeholders, including the national and local governments, universities, the private sector, NGOs, and communities, leading to interest from multiple parties in adopting similar practices. EMR and Associated Mangrove Aquaculture (AMA) were recognised by the World Bank and Indonesia’s Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) as critical approaches to successfully achieving mangrove restoration in Indonesia, which should influence investment by the Government of Indonesia toward EMR-based mangrove restoration, contributing to our goal to influence a phasing out of mass planting initiatives. Recommendations for using EMR can now be found in various government plans and programmes.
- Building Capacity on Ecological Mangrove Restoration across the world
To restore mangroves, active planting has gained popularity worldwide, including in many areas where Wetlands International works. Planting mangroves may seem like an easy and quick way to restore, but planting efforts have been failing to a large extent (~80%), especially in areas that have been extensively altered. Wetlands International therefore adopted a more effective approach called Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) in its projects, and has been building the capacity of around 700 stakeholders around the world to use and upscale the approach through regular CBEMR trainings. Participants practice taking salinity measurements to understand soil salinity, which is an important parameter in mangrove growth. Elizabeth Wamba, Wetlands International Enabling mangroves to regrow naturally The Community-based Ecological Mangrove Restoration approach moves away from monoculture planting towards restoring the hydrology and other enabling conditions for mangroves to regrow naturally. Planting is only undertaken when absolutely necessary, for example if there is a lack of seed supplies to your site. While natural regeneration takes longer than planting, trees that naturally appear will be able to survive in the suitable conditions that were created and deliver more benefits for biodiversity, climate and people. In contrast, planting tends to use a single species in often unsuitable biophysical conditions for the species used. These mangroves are also more susceptible to pests and diseases. In addition, restoration projects must create the right socioeconomic conditions to support their long-term protection. BEMR training in North Kalimantan, Mangrove Action Project Enabling others to effectively restore mangroves Through various projects including ‘To Plant or not to Plant’ in Indonesia, Philippines, Guinea Bissau and Tanzania, and our Mangrove Capital Africa programme in West and East Africa, Wetlands International is restoring mangroves together with local partners, using the CBEMR approach. While the activities we support or carry out ourselves get results in the locations where they take place, we do everything we can to enable others to do the same things across far larger areas than we’re able to directly cover ourselves. Awareness-raising, training and technical support are all central aspects of our work with local communities and NGOs, who we encourage and support to adopt our approaches and share them more widely. For training its stakeholders on the CBEMR approach, Wetlands International joins hands with Mangrove Action Project. Together we train community organisations, national and local governments and county officials, park managers, research institutions, universities, private sector and civil society. This often leads to adoption of these best in their projects. Thus far we have trained # across the world, in North Kalimantan, (Indonesia), Saloum Delta (Senegal), Lamu, Tana River and Mombasa counties (Kenya), Rufiji Delta (Tanzania), Cacheu National Park (Guinea Bissau) and Mozambique. The Ecological Mangrove Restoration trainings are always tailored to participant’s needs and the local mangrove conditions. For instance, In Tanzania, the training also specifically focused on the issue of encroachment by rice farmers in the western end of the Delta. The trainings are always fun and diverse, involving interactive class sessions, table exercises, group sessions, and numerous field visits, all translated into the common local language. Fun at the class session in Mombasa, Kenya. Wetlands International Participants are always enlightened on the importance of mangroves and the right techniques to restore them. Some trainees have to relearn what they know as facts about mangroves and their restoration. Abdulrahman Lali, Chair of Lamu Mangrove Community Forest Association :“I am almost 50 years old and in my whole life, I have all along known that salt is a necessity for healthy mangroves. At the beginning of CBEMR training, I argued with the trainers about mangroves being salt-tolerant. But after the field visits with the MAP and Wetlands International teams to assess the hydrology, measure salinity and pH levels, I have observed and agreed that too much salt is a stressor to our unique forests. I have been to Mombasa, Malindi and Nairobi for mangrove restoration training workshops organised by various institutions. But this CBEMR training is like none other. Also, in Lamu, we harvest mangroves legally. The cutters are in the business as it is their main source of livelihood. If there is an alternative and sustainable livelihood, then we would encourage them to shift from mangrove cutting to stem mangrove loss." CBEMR training in Rufiji Delta. Wetlands International Mwanahamisi Jillo, a manager with Lower Tana Delta Conservation Trust , travelled some 120 kilometres east with her 11-month baby to attend the training in Lamu. Appreciating the knowledge gained from the training, Jillo also laments about the restoration efforts she and her colleagues have done in the past. “I wish this CBEMR training had been conducted years ago. Had I known how to identify the ecological and biophysical conditions first, I would never have planted mangroves in drainages and waterways as I have done. It’s the best training I have participated in and I am grateful to Wetlands International and MAP for this opportunity. Mangrove Action Project – a global charity dedicated to promoting science-based training to conserve and protect mangroves – has launched their 10th Mangrove Photography Awards . The competition invites photographers of all ages and levels to submit images that showcase the beauty, diversity and fragility of mangrove forests worldwide. There are 5 single image categories that appeal to a range of interests and approaches – Wildlife, People, Landscape, Threats and Underwater – as well as Conservation Stories, a multiple image category allowing photographers to tell powerful narratives related to mangrove habitats. Photographers of all backgrounds, ages, and levels are invited to submit their images in any of the categories. A winner will be chosen for each category, with an overall winner being crowned Mangrove Photographer of the Year. Meanwhile, photographers under the age of 23 will vie for the Young Mangrove Photographer of the Year prize. All winners will be announced on 26th July to celebrate World Mangrove Day. The competition is free to enter with cash prizes for each category. This year’s judging panel includes one of India’s most accomplished nature and wildlife photographers, Dhritiman Mukherjee; National Geographic Explorer and International League of Conservation Photographers senior fellow Morgan Heim; and Christian Ziegler, a renowned photojournalist specializing in natural history, conservation and science stories. - Engaging Local Ecological Knowledge to Inform Mangrove Restoration and Conservation
World Wetlands Day 2024 UPDATE: The Local Ecological Knowledge guide is now available in full in Swahili , Bahasa , and Spanish languages. As part of 2024 World Wetlands Day celebrations, the Global Mangrove Alliance is excited to produce a special edition newsletter to announce a new Guide sharing Local Ecological Knowledge as well as two upcoming webinars focused on improving restoration practices and climate-smart management of mangrove ecosystems. Our new guide “ Including Local Ecological Knowledge in Mangrove Restoration & Conservation ” was designed to help mangrove researchers and practitioners include local ecological knowledge in their projects. Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) is the knowledge, practices, and beliefs gained through extensive personal observation of and interaction with local ecosystems which is shared among local resource users and is typically handed down through generations of local inhabitants, often Indigenous. This first of its kind guide provides a greater understanding into how researchers have included LEK about mangroves specifically and provides best practices for engaging with and harnessing the power of LEK in mangrove restoration and conservation. It also features more than twenty case studies of mangrove projects engaging LEK around the world.

Dubai, UAE, 10th, December, 2023: COP28 made significant progress towards securing the Mangrove Breakthrough’s goal of 15 million hectares of mangroves underpinned by USD 4 billion of new investments by 2030. Global mangrove protection and restoration has secured significant support of over 40 new governments via the Mangrove Breakthrough leading to and at the UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai.(1) Ministers, indigenous peoples and local community organizations, financial institutions, philanthropies, NGOs, and other stakeholders presented progress and ambitious commitments on policy, finance, and technology to deliver the Breakthrough. They also agreed on options to collectively measure implementation and ensure responsiveness to gaps and opportunities in the spirit of the Global Stocktake. COP28’s Nature, Land Use and Ocean Day saw countries and non-state actors make commitments on mangrove conservation and restoration of 15 million hectares of mangroves by 2030 with a goal of reaching USD 4 billion of sustainable finance. The event saw a formal partnership announced between the Mangrove Alliance for Climate and the Mangrove Breakthrough. This will mean 49 governments (representing around 60% of the world’s mangroves) as well as over 50 non-state actors are supporting the Mangrove Breakthrough targets to halt mangrove destruction by 2030.(2) H.E. Razan Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28 & IUCN President , recognized the significance of the high level, cross-sector convening, and shared the following: “By convening such a diverse group of stakeholders between the Global Mangrove Alliance and the Mangrove Alliance for Climate, under the shared vision and science-based targets of the Mangrove Breakthrough, today’s event represents a global milestone in mangrove conservation. Achieving the goals of the Mangrove Breakthrough will catalyse policy changes and financial investments necessary to meet biodiversity and climate targets. During this Ministerial event, the Belize Minister also announced the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Coalition for Nature’s launch of the “SIDS Nature-Climate Action Roadmap”. The Minister stated that upon availability of technical and financial resources, this Roadmap can facilitate the implementation of nature-based solutions across more than 2.6 million hectares in at least 33 marine protected areas and would include the restoration of over 72,000 hectares of mangroves. The proposed areas of implementation are spread across at least 13 SIDS in the 3 SIDS regions. Political momentum has never been higher to realize mangroves’ massive potential as a carbon sink (mangroves can sequester 4x as much atmospheric carbon as rainforests), protect coastlines, provide habitats, and support local livelihoods. This ministerial and non-state actor-led event brought together the major partnerships and initiatives behind the Mangrove Breakthrough – leveraging mangroves’ unique role in accelerating the delivery of both the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This event featured new and impactful policies, technologies, and investments from a wide range of public and private leaders that will support mangroves towards adaptation, mitigation, health, and development outcomes. Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister for Climate Change and Environment addressed the milestone and said: “Mangroves are the unsung heroes in our fight against climate change. They are the sentinels of our coasts and the guardians of our marine biodiversity. The UAE recognizes the immense value of mangroves. Our ambitious goal to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030 is a testament to this recognition.” The Bezos Earth Fund announced a two-year, USD 2 million grant to the Global Mangrove Alliance, via Wetlands International, to support design and delivery of the Mangrove Breakthrough. This grant supports coalition-building of technical, political, and financial partners, the design of regional investment strategies, and curation of a pipeline of locally led mangrove restoration and conservation projects in 3 countries. Oliver Wyman donated USD 100,000 to support the establishment of the Mangrove Breakthrough Secretariat. Nature, Land Use, and Oceans Day at COP28 also saw Germany, Norway and the UK announce funding to address the drastic underfunding of mangrove protection – and to deliver on its game-changing potential. The Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will boost support for global mangrove protection with the announcement of two mangrove conservation and coastal management projects in Dominica and Mozambique. These grants of USD 1.3 million are being launched, for which the UNEP are matching with USD 440,000 to support the preparation of two coastal management and mangrove conservation protects on Dominica and Mozambique totaling over USD 60 million from the Green Climate Fund. This announcement on GCF project preparation support was made by Hong Paterson, GCF Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, during our COP38 ‘Mangrove Ministerial’ event. Alongside these philanthropic contributions, there has been significant contributions and announcements being brought forward by governments. The UK announced £72.5 million (USD 91 million) in new programs from its flagship Blue Planet Fund, some of which will be deployed to support the targets under the Mangrove Breakthrough. Cristián Samper, Managing Director and Leader for Nature Solutions at the Bezos Earth Fund, identifying the role of mangroves in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises, said: “Mangroves cover just 0.1% of the Earth’s surface but punch far above their weight. They provide a triple-win for people, nature, and climate and play an outsized role in fighting our global biodiversity crisis. The Mangrove Breakthrough is a clarion call to secure the future of 15 million hectares of mangroves worldwide by 2030. We are pleased to partner in this effort—beginning with the vital work to connect locally led mangrove projects with funding to grow, replicate, and scale their work.” Securing the future of the mangroves that remain requires this urgent collective action. The Mangrove Breakthrough aims to create a global movement to drive policy change and capital flow to deliver on biodiversity and climate targets. This never before seen convening aimed to mobilize new partners and resources needed to achieve the Mangrove Breakthrough, provide greater political visibility on the investment returns from mangrove ecosystems, while also sharing best practices in mangrove protection and restoration, with a focus on leadership by local and Indigenous communities. Throughout this cross-sector ‘Mangrove Moment’ during COP28’s Ocean Day, there was a clear focus on highlighting innovative and effective technology to protect and restore mangroves while also supporting measurements and tracking of implementation. Han de Groot, CEO, Wetlands International, recognizing the growing ambition around mangrove conservation and protection, stated that “The Mangrove Breakthrough has come a long way since COP27. We are honoured to be part of shepherding it to what it is today: a robust, scientifically and financially achievable pathway to scaled-up mangrove protection and restoration, now with the gravity of nations and the private sector behind it. We look forward to more endorsements, because now more than ever, we need to keep the momentum going.” Mangrove forests exist in over 100 countries, they are critical coastal ecosystems and are proven Nature-Based Solutions for both adaptation and mitigation. They sequester in many cases 4 times as much atmospheric carbon as rainforests and are known for fostering incredible biodiversity, enhancing coastal resilience, and supporting local livelihoods. At the same time, mangrove restoration and protection are drastically underfunded compared to the returns on investment, receiving only ~1% of climate finance. Jennifer Morris, CEO of The Nature Conservancy, one of the founding civil society organisations to the Global Mangrove Alliance believes “As one of the world’s most important ecosystems, Mangroves not only help protect coast lines, they provide critical resources for local communities and their livelihoods. - Financial Roadmap for Mangrove Protection and Restoration Launched
Dubai, UAE, 4th, December, 2023 A report which offers a practical roadmap to scale up capital flow into mangrove protection and restoration has been launched at COP28 today. Developed by The Global Mangrove Alliance and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions (HLCs), in partnership with Systemiq the Mangrove Breakthrough: Financial Roadmap provides a pathway to achieve the financial goals of the Mangrove Breakthrough which was launched at COP27 and will be highlighted at a COP28 Ministerial on 9 December organized by the COP28 Presidency, the HLCs, the Mangrove Alliance for Climate, and the Global Mangrove Alliance. H.E. Razan Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, said: “Unlocking capital at scale for mangroves will be critical. Long term flows of public, private and philanthropic capital are needed to keep healthy mangroves standing, create nature and people-positive businesses and livelihoods, and to regenerate and restore degraded mangroves. Finance providers must step up – but they cannot do so alone. Policymakers, local communities and indigenous people, NGOs and civil society will all also have a vital role to play. This Financial Roadmap offers a guiding hand. These ‘blue forests’ defend our coastlines from waves and wind, supporting the resilience of some of the world’s most climate-vulnerable communities. For many in these communities, they are also a vital source of food and livelihoods. Despite the extraordinary ecosystem services they provide, mangroves are under threat – half have already been lost. But an estimated $4 billion in investment between now and 2030 could secure their future. The Global Mangrove Alliance in partnership with the UN Climate Champions and Systemiq have developed a new Financial Roadmap for the Mangrove in collaboration with the Financial Services Taskforce of the Sustainable Markets Initiative. This report offers in-depth analysis and detailed recommendations. It makes the case for using financial instruments in innovative and complementary ways; it also shows why creating the right enabling conditions will be key to their success. Taken together, these measures can mobilise private, public and philanthropic capital at speed and scale. Mangroves provide critical ecosystem services that fundamentally underpin business models across multiple sectors, but this dependence also brings risks. Businesses are exposed to the potential loss of nature from extreme events, or longer-term shifts in the way that coastal and marine ecosystems function – or cease to function. As well as helping mitigate these risks, transitioning towards nature-positive business models can also unlock significant opportunities. These risks and opportunities can result in a financial impact on a company by increasing or decreasing revenues or expenditures (income statement impacts) or by impacting assets, liabilities or capital (balance sheet impacts). Mangrove Breakthrough: the crucial role of finance The good news is that a new asset class of regenerative mangrove-positive business models is already emerging. Financing conservation areas will remain critical. But sustainable productive businesses also have a vital role to play in creating long-term, market-driven mechanisms to ensure mangroves are more valuable standing than destroyed. Business models like blue carbon, sustainable aquaculture and fisheries, ecotourism, waste infrastructure, and technology enablers can generate real financial returns while building resilient coastal communities and creating a host of environmental benefits. The Mangrove Transition Curve – an investor tool – maps this diverse landscape of opportunities. Capital with different mandates and risk-return profiles will be required, and combining these sources of capital in “blended” mechanisms will be especially critical to mobilise investment for nascent business models and in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). Unlocking this opportunity at the speed and scale needed must tackle structural challenges and inefficiencies in deploying capital. Today, too little finance is flowing to mangroves. What capital there is comes predominantly from governments and philanthropic sources. But many EMDE governments – facing weak global growth, rising interest rates and increasing debt burdens – have limited fiscal space for investment in nature. Philanthropic capital is scarce, and development and climate finance has failed to meaningfully tackle the funding gap. Meanwhile private capital for mangrove conservation and restoration remains a drop in the ocean. Barriers to investment include a limited pipeline of projects, and real and perceived risks that raise the cost of capital and mean finance is unavailable, inaccessible, or unaffordable. Despite these challenges, there are signs that the tide is turning for investment in mangroves. New markets and mechanisms, like blue carbon, are gaining ground, and natural capital investors are stepping up to capitalize on this opportunity. Innovative financial instruments that unlock new sources of investment in a sustainable ocean economy are building track record. At the same time, awareness is growing of mangroves as a low-cost solution to build resilience and reduce physical and financial risks for coastal communities. “We can move further and faster” Of the estimated $4 billion investment needed by 2030, around a third – $1.2 billion – could come from commercial sources. Philanthropic, development and public finance will deliver the rest. Much of this commercial capital will need to be de-risked through blending with grant and concessional capital. - Trans-isthmic Carbon Dynamic
Methane and carbon dioxide emissions from soil and trees in mangrove ecosystems of Panamá. As many countries strive to reduce their carbon emissions, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have emerged as one of the most promising alternatives. However, accurately assessing the overall contribution of different ecosystems to carbon mitigation requires understanding their capacity for carbon sequestration and emission. Given Panama’s decision to prioritize mangroves in its climate strategy, it is crucial for the country to not only estimate the baseline levels of aboveground and belowground carbon in mangroves but also to conduct research aimed at quantifying the net contribution of mangroves to greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2 and CH4. Additionally, when estimating greenhouse gas emissions, it is important to consider various factors that influence carbon dynamics, such as nutrient inputs, organic matter content in soil, and the physiological characteristics of different mangrove species. To enhance the carbon balance in Panamanian mangroves within the framework of the Blue Natural Heritage project, we are currently carrying out a series of in situ and ex situ experiments. These experiments involve measuring greenhouse gas emissions from soil and trees in both Pacific and Caribbean mangroves, as well as cultivating mangrove seedlings under controlled conditions. Our experimental approach is a collaborative effort involving researchers from the Environmental Biogeochemistry Laboratory (UMAG, Chile), the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Panama), the Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2, Chile), the Universidad de la Frontera (Chile), and McGill University (Canada). These experiments are being conducted in collaboration with undergraduate and postgraduate students from Panama, with the aim of building national research capacities. Preliminary findings from our research indicate substantial variation in greenhouse gas emissions among different mangrove species, with pronounced spatial and temporal dynamics. Yuheimy Castillo 1,4 , Diana Castillo 1,4 , Eric Manzané 2,7 , Jorge Morales 3 , Brian Leung 3 , Alejandro Miranda 4,5,6 , and Jorge Hoyos-Santillan 4,5,7,8 are currently conducting the experiments and analyses. By combining our results with our parallel investigations on the spatial distribution of mangrove species, we will significantly contribute to advancing our understanding of the carbon balance and net contribution of Panama’s mangroves as a climate strategy.
